Summer Road Trip

January 2018

Thinking about hitting in the road? Here’s a little flashback to my 2018 road trip. I flew from Sydney to Melbourne (Avalon) hired a car, knew where I was staying and roughly what I wanted to see, and off I went. My travel snaps here are in no particular order. Enjoy!

5 Nights / 6 Days

Torquay (1 Night)

  • Stay: Torquay Hotel / Motel

  • Eat: Blackman's Brewery Bar and Restaurant

  • Play: Bells Beach, Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch & long walks and lunch in Lorne.

Apollo Bay (2 Nights)

  • Stay: Seaview Motel & Apartments

  • Eat: The Apollo Bay Hotel, Great Ocean Road Brewhouse

  • Play: Otways Walks & Waterfalls - There are many options if walks and waterfalls are your thing. Even if they’re not, Apollo Bay is a beautiful place. I checked out Triplet Falls & Little Aire Falls as they were side by side but wished I ventured to a few more. Pack plenty of water and snacks for the day.

Port Campbell (1 Night)

  • Stay: Sea Foam Villas

  • Eat: Nico’s

  • Play: Cape Otway Lightstation, Gibson Steps, Twelve Apostles & Loch Ard Gorge which was my favourite stop. There is so much more to this cove then what those iconic shots show you. I had one of those “this was unexpected” moments. Got to love that!

Port Fairy (1 Night)

  • Stay: Ashmont Motel & Apartments

  • Eat: Lemongrass Thai Port Fairy

  • Play: London Bridge, The Grotto, Bay of Islands, Griffiths Island, Tower Hill.

While the Great Ocean Road technically finishes at Allansford (Route B100), I went on to Port Fairy as recommended by a friend and that’s where you’ll find these last two sights, Griffiths Island and Tower Hill - where I did a quick, very steep (burn off the last of that holiday energy) climb on the drive inland back to the airport.
